Following extensive testing and analysis of its groundwater supply, the City of Metropolis upgraded its Water Treatment Plant to convert from surface water treatment (Class A) to groundwater treatment (Class B). The upgrade aimed to reduce operating costs and improve reliability.

The project included installation of a new induced draft aerator, a 200,000-gallon detention tank, and chemical feed modifications for the new process. Existing solids contact cones were removed, eliminating a recurring operations and maintenance issue. These improvements allowed the City to reallocate staff to other departments and reduce overall operating time and cost at the treatment plant.
