This project is located on County Highway 19 (Jamestown Road) at its crossing of Locust Fork Creek, approximately 2.0 miles south of East Pierron, Illinois. The project replaced an existing four-span timber bridge with a new three-span, precast prestressed concrete deck beam bridge. Stage construction was used, and the bridge features a hot-mix asphalt wearing surface with a waterproofing membrane.
The original structure measured approximately 146’-1” back-to-back of abutments with 12’ lanes, while the new bridge spans 48’-6⅝”, 60’-0”, and 48’-6⅝”, totaling 160’-0” back-to-back of abutments and a clear roadway width of 36’-0” at a 30° skew. The bridge is designed to AASHTO LRFD HL-93 loading standards and is located in Seismic Performance Zone 2 on Soil Site Class D. The substructure consists of spill-through pile bent abutments on driven piles and piers with piles set in rock.
The project also included approximately 640 feet of approach roadway work and a crest vertical curve over the bridge to minimize grading. HMG provided funding application support, topographic and property surveys, permitting, geometric design, legal surveys, easement and right-of-way plats, bridge hydraulics and design, preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates, as well as construction observation.
