The first step HMG undertook was early coordination with IDOT due to the proximity of the intersection to the US 50 interchange. HMG evaluated existing and future traffic levels for preparation of a Traffic Study and Intersection Design Studies (IDS), all submitted to, and approved by, IDOT. After completion of preliminary engineering, Clinton County and the City opted to utilize County Federal funds in conjunction with local matches, thus initiating involvement by IDOT District 8 as the administering Agency. Early on, it became apparent the County’s funding commitments would require preparation of three (3) different projects.

The first project, Drainage Project “A”, involved $488,000 of new drainage system installations to alleviate the infrequent flooding at the intersection, including over 500 feet of 5’x 3’ box culvert extending to the interchange with US 50. The second project, Drainage Project “B”, involved $387,000 of additional drainage systems. The final project involves predominately paving work, including construction of the roundabout for a cost of $2.5 million. The circulatory of the roundabout is 18’ wide with a center to edge diameter of 160’. M-6.12 and B-9.12 curb either side of the truck apron define it with a 62’ radius to the inner edge of the circulatory. The truck apron is 15.5’ wide. The project was constructed in 2018.
