North Cherry Street serves as a critical north/south local street within the city limits of Breese. On the eastern edge of the Central Business District, it services many prominent traffic generators such as Clintonian Plaza, Ace Hardware, Breese Emergency Management System, and will be adjacent to the proposed All Saints Academy expansion.

The oil & chip pavement with limited storm sewer was not adequate for the increasing traffic levels. After reconstructing North Cherry Street with new PCC pavement, yearly City maintenance will be greatly reduced, as well as overall ride quality. The undersized storm sewer system has been upgraded to handle design storms without any potential for flooding or encroachment on the street. The sidewalk and sidewalk curb ramps were upgraded to meet ADA compliance, ensuring that students and pedestrians have safe sidewalks to use.

HMG has performed the design and plan preparation for the project. While under construction, HMG provided an engineer on site to ensure that the plans were met, and that construction was on schedule. The project materials consisted of new storm sewers, PCC sidewalk, PCC pavement, ADA ramps and street reconstruction. The project was completed in the spring of 2023 and cost $1,516,300 to construct.
